Situated in our grounds of 92 acres is the site of the Norman Cefnllys Castle which occupies a position of strength and beauty at the top of Castle Bank.

The Castle, also known as 'Clastell Glan Ithon', was built by Roger Mortimer, and played its part in border skirmishes between the Welsh and English. This castle was destroyed during fighting in 1262 and replaced with Cefnllys Church a more substantial one at the South West tip of the hill which survived until the late 1400s when the Manorial Court was transferred to the Neuadd.

The castle was supported by the small town of Cefnllys, built at the base of the hill. When the castle became a ruin, the town gradually disappeared and now only the 13th Century church remains.
